Year 5 historians have LOVED our history topic all about Mining in the local area. They have been so engaged and enthusiastic throughout, telling stories about grandparents, great grandparents and even great, great grandparents who worked down the pit. Some of our historians even brought in some photos, books, tokens and Davey Lamps their family members have. We have also started a little display showing show mining is personal to our class.
We have even listened to some staff’s experiences during the miners strikes.
We had an afternoon with a REAL ex-miner, who spoke to us all about mining in Royston and a little bit about the strikes and pit closures. The children were hooked and asked lots of excellent questions, followed by looking at some REAL coal!
