Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Who are we?
My name is Mrs Brook and I will be your teacher this year. Mrs Cheetham is the teaching assistant who will be working with individuals and groups of children throughout the year.  Mrs Saynor will be your teacher every Monday.

Reading in Year One…
We love reading!
In Year One we follow the Read, Write, Inc phonics programme daily. In addition, we will read a range of high quality texts and develop and share a love of reading. Reading at home is important to support your child's progress. Reading books will be changed and sent home on a Wednesday. Your child will receive a phonics book which is linked to their current phonics abilities. Please encourage your child to read this book themselves. It might be a few pages a day, or they could read the book again and again! Your child will also bring home a library book. This book can be shared together with an adult. We use reading records so you can make comments and we can track reading. Please make sure children bring their books into school daily as we will take every opportunity to listen to your children read!

Spellings
New spellings will be sent home on a Friday. There will be six new spellings to practise. Four of these spellings will be linked to a spelling rule. The other two spellings will be common exception words for Year 1.  Children will be tested on these spellings the following Friday.  Spelling books will stay in school but on the spelling sheet sent home, you will be able to see how your child gets on with each set of spelling words.

Maths/Wider Curriculum...
Knowing numbers to 10 is important for the start of Year 1. Please practise reading, writing and counting numbers up to 10 at home. This can be completed in a variety of games (e.g. snakes and ladders, dominoes, board games, counting objects).
In the wider curriculum, your child will be provided with their knowledge organiser that gives children all the essential knowledge they must have to deepen their understanding in school.

PE
Year One will be doing PE on a Monday and a Wednesday. Children must come to school in their PE kits. For health and safety reasons, your child should not wear jewellery on these days, especially earrings.  They must have appropriate footwear too. Due to the weather, PE lessons may be indoors or outdoors and this can change regularly.
