Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

This is where you can find everything that you need to know about year one and how we approach learning.

Who are we?

My name is Miss Marsh and I am the year one teacher. Mrs Hague and Mrs Bailey are the teaching assistants in our class, Mr Hague also teaches us on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Homework

Your child will be sent home with a list of spellings relating to what we have been learning in phonics, or our current spelling rule. Please encourage your child to practice them at home as much as possible.

To help your child with their maths fluency, they have access to Numbots. If you need any help with this, or require your child’s login details, please ask. Each week, a child will be chosen to be celebrated in our celebration assembly on Friday.

Finally, we ask you to read, read and read some more!

P.E.
Our PE sessions are on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Children should attend school in their full P.E kits on these days and they must have appropriate footwear too, either trainers or pumps. For health and safety reasons your child should not wear jewellery, including earrings, on these days.

Reading:

Please spend time reading with your child every day.

We love to read to your children, as well as spending time listening to your children read in school every day. Your child’s Read, Write, Inc. reading book is specifically linked to the phonics that they are currently learning in school. Please make sure that they come to school each day with their reading book and reading record. Each time your child has a recorded read at home, they will receive a raffle ticket to be entered into our half termly prize draw. Every time they read, they will also move up the reading rocket and enjoy extra playtime on Friday.

Towards the end of the week, when we have listened to your child read in school and you have listened to them at home, we will change your child’s reading book. This is why it is so important that it is in their book bag every day. Your child will also be given time to choose a love for reading book from our school library. These are books to promote a love of reading, which have an age-appropriate content, but will need reading to your child, as they do not match up to our Read, Write, Inc. Phonics scheme.

If you have any questions about this year, then please do not hesitate to ask any of the Year 1 staff, who are more than happy to help on any matter big or small!
