At the Parents' Consultation Meeting parents gave very positive feedback to the Governing Body proposal to convert to academy status. No parents opposed the proposal.

The Governing Body would like to inform parents that, in agreement with the Department for Education, and after consultation with our school community, including parents, that Royston S John Baptist CE (VA) Primary School will convert to academy status with St Mary's Academy Trust (SMAT).

Here are some of the points raised and questions asked throughout the parents' consultation meeting:

  • Q: Will  our school have to have a different name?
  • A: The Voluntary Aided (VA) will go, but we will be almost the same: Royston St John Baptist CE Primary School.
  • Q: Will our school still be a church school?
  • A: Yes. The Christian foundation of our school will remain the same. SMAT is a multi-academy trust within our new diocese of Leeds, West Yorkshire and the Dales. Our school could not join a multi-academy trust outside the umbrella of the diocese.
  • Q: Will our uniform change?
  • A: No, it will stay the same. Our school logo might change.
  • Q: How will becoming a part of a multi-academy trust/ St Mary's Academy Trust benefit our children?
  • A: Our school has been working alongside schools within SMAT over the past year. Teachers and support staff have benefited from networking opportunities to share good practice and have accessed training specific to their year groups. As a result our children benefit from up-to-date practice in school. There are opportunities for children to enter inter-school competitions, e.g. sports, imagination game, debates, etc., where they will play alongside children from schools across Barnsley.
  • Q: Which other schools are a part of SMAT?
  • A: St Mary's CE Primary; All Saints Academy, Darfield; Darton Primary;                        The Mill Academy; West Meadows Primary; Queens Road Academy. Each school offers areas of expertise to other schools across the trust, sharing good practice.
  • Q: Who will our school be accountable to?
  • A: Our own Governing Body, St Mary's Academy Trust Board and Ofsted.
  • Q: When will Ofsted next come? What outcome do we expect?
  • A: We are overdue! We have made progress since our last inspection, which has been moderated by the Local Authority and SMAT. We would hope and expect to be judged as a good school.
